This page is a reference, not a sales page. Every hour, rule and fee below comes from the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Environmental Management(its public site is hawaiizerowaste.org) and is attributed where it appears. Facts were checked against the County pages on 2026-09-12; the County changes hours and fees without notice, so the County page linked under each rule is the authority.

Where do I take it, and when is it open?
The County lists 23 Solid Waste Division facilities — the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill, the East Hawaiʻi Reload Facility and 21Recycling & Transfer Stations — plus two organics facilities. The 21 stations below are the 21 on the County's list as of 2026-09-12. Transfer stations are for residential self-haul; the landfill and reload facility are where larger loads and commercial loads go.
All Residential Recycling & Transfer Stations accept household generated self-haul rubbish at no charge (no commercial, government agency or farm waste allowed, no commercial hauling allowed).
Household refuse, residential do-it-yourself construction and demolition, soft compactable bulky items (mattresses, stuffed chairs, and couches) and residential self-hauled greenwaste.
Maximum one (1) residential load (rubbish or construction & demolition material) per day. Maximum three (3) cubic yards per load and maximum dimension of 7 feet for any item.
Vehicle types utilizing the Transfer Stations are limited to sedans, SUVs, pickup trucks, or vans. Dump bed trucks are prohibited.

More than one load of ordinary rubbish?
Residential generator with more than one load (per day) of rubbish (non-Construction & Demolition Material) are allowed to take any additional loads directly to either the East Hawaiʻi Regional Sort Station or the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill (not the Transfer Station). Tip fees will apply.
Why can't I take my demolition debris to the Hilo landfill?
Because, in the County's words, the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill stopped taking it in 2019, and it is not on the County's current facility list. The Hilo facility today is the East Hawaiʻi Reload Facility— the County also calls it the East Hawaiʻi Regional Sort Station — and the County caps what it accepts there.
Construction and demolition debris (C&D debris) and grading and grubbing materials are not accepted at the South Hilo Sanitary Landfill effective August 1, 2019, and must be hauled to the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill (a.k.a. Puʻuanahulu).
C&D loads destined for the East Hawaiʻi Reload Facility (Sort Station) must not exceed 5 cubic yards per load. A five (5) cubic yard load will fit in a standard size pickup truck with an 8-foot long bed filled to the top of the cab. C&D loads larger than 5 cubic yards shall be taken to the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill.
Per the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Environmental Management: residential do-it-yourself C&D up to 3 cubic yards is accepted at Recycling & Transfer Stations, one load per day (SW Rule 2-5-15); C&D up to 5 cubic yards is accepted at the East Hawaiʻi Reload Facility in Hilo (SW Rule 2-4-7); C&D above the applicable per-load limit goes to the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill at Puʻuanahulu; asbestos and canec go to the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill only (SW Rule 2-1-3). Confirm the limit that applies to your load with the Solid Waste Division at 808-961-8270 — the County, not us, is the authority on it.
If you are disposing more than 50 cubic yards of C&D waste per day to the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill please notify the West Hawaiʻi Scale House (886-8059) at least 24 hours prior to disposing for scheduling.
Commercial loads need a permit
Landfill & Reload Facility Disposal Permits: Required for commercial disposal of waste at both the East Hawaiʻi Reload Facility (Sort Station) in Hilo and at the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill (WHSL) in Puʻuanahulu.
The County directs permit and billing questions to Solid Waste Accounting at 808-961-8339.
Asbestos and canec
No asbestos or canec building material waste. Customers shall take asbestos and canec waste to the West Hawaiʻi Sanitary Landfill only. Special handling fees will apply. Recommendation: Hire a professional licensed asbestos abatement company.

What the County charges
These are the County of Hawaiʻi Department of Environmental Management's fees, from its Administrative Rules of Practice and Procedure revised 2024-07-15, as published on www.hawaiizerowaste.org. They are the County's figures, not ours.
